Ultrasound in Panama, also known as sonography, is a medical test used to examine the internal structures of the body. It can also be used to measure the size of a baby in the womb, look for signs of growth abnormalities or developmental delays.
A diagnostic tool that uses sound waves to produce images of the inside of the body. They are commonly used in prenatal care and to help diagnose problems such as cancer, kidney stones, gastrointestinal disease and gallstones.
They can also be used to evaluate blood flow through the heart or measure blood pressure in the arteries. An ultrasound can help physicians identify tumors or other abnormalities in organs that are difficult to see during a noninvasive consultation.

What to expect during an ultrasound?
Ultrasounds are a non-invasive medical test that will not cause any discomfort other than the pressure of the device on your skin. During an ultrasound, a technician will place a small device called a transducer against your skin and move it in different directions while sending out sound waves. The echoes from these waves bounce off internal organs and structures, creating an image on a computer screen. The images can be so clear that technicians can sometimes see details as small as 0.1 mm (0.004 inches).
The time required depends on the type of scan you need to perform and where in your body it is performed. If only one area is being scanned, such as the heart or kidneys, it usually takes about 15 minutes. However, if multiple areas are involved, such as the chest, abdomen or pelvis, expect about an hour for each area scanned due to the number of organs that need to be evaluated and observed in detail.
Types of ultrasound
Ultrasound technology has been around since its first use in medicine more than 50 years ago. It was used primarily by medical professionals who specialized in ultrasound imaging (also called sonographers). Today there are several different types of ultrasound that vary depending on how they produce sound waves:
- Doppler: A Doppler ultrasound uses a pulsed sound wave that measures blood flow. The device is placed on the body and moved in small circles or back and forth to collect blood flow data. It can be used to evaluate heart function.
- Transabdominal: A transabdominal ultrasound uses a probe on the outside of the abdomen to measure internal organs. It can be used to diagnose problems such as ovarian cysts, appendicitis, tumors and gallstones.
- Transvaginal: a probe inserted into the vagina is used to measure the internal organs. It is used to detect pelvic masses, fibroid tumors, ovarian cysts and ectopic pregnancies.
Ultrasound in the Clinic
Make sure you are relaxed and comfortable. You may want to bring a blanket and loose clothing is recommended for the exam (so the technician can move freely).
Avoid eating or drinking anything other than water for four hours prior to the test, unless your doctor tells you otherwise beforehand. Depending on the organ to be tested, your bladder may also need to be empty or full at the beginning of the test.
You may be asked to lie down on a stretcher and relax, or to stand up while you are being scanned.
The importance of reviewing your results with your physician
Having an ultrasound in Panama is one of the safest ways to obtain this information without side effects or complications.
While ultrasound is a very useful medical test, it does not always provide an accurate diagnosis. Many conditions can mimic each other and an ultrasound alone may not be sufficient for a complete diagnosis. It is important to have other tests as well to make sure the diagnosis is accurate.
